The DLMS User Association is pleased to welcome an important milestone for the DLMS ecosystem in the United States. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has officially published the DLMS ACESM Generic Companion Profile (GCP) and its North American annex as NEMA C12 ANSI-registered Technical Reports.
This achievement marks a significant step forward for interoperability in the U.S. electricity metering market and reinforces the growing importance of open, standardized communication frameworks for smart metering systems.
Supporting Open Standards and Vendor-Neutral Solutions
As utilities continue to modernize infrastructure and expand smart grid capabilities, interoperability remains essential. Open standards such as DLMS/COSEM allow utilities and solution providers to integrate technologies more efficiently, reduce vendor lock-in, and improve long-term scalability.
The publication of these Technical Reports marks an important advancement in promoting standardized and interoperable communication for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployments throughout North America. Together, these publications help strengthen consistent and interoperable data exchange frameworks across the electricity sector.
Looking Ahead
The publication of the ACESM GCP specification and its North American annex as NEMA C12 ANSI-registered Technical Reports is an important step toward broader adoption of open communication standards in the United States energy sector.
This milestone further strengthens the foundation for interoperable, future-ready smart metering systems that benefit utilities, manufacturers, solution providers, and ultimately energy consumers.
Congratulations and thank you to all members, partners, and contributors who helped achieve this important milestone for the DLMS ecosystem.
