Is DLMS/COSEM suitable for simple meters?

While DLMS/COSEM is able to support a very rich feature set, it is also suitable for simple metering equipment.

This is possible because there are only a few mandatory elements. So very simple devices can be modelled – or when taking more options, very complex ones as well.

On the model level, the only mandatory element is the management logical device, which may be the only one. This must contain a SAP assignment object holding the SAP-s of all logical devices. Each logical device must have an object holding the logical device name, and a current association object, so that the list of objects available can be retrieved. For simple devices with small memory resources, pre-established associations can be defined. The management logical device must support an association with a public client, allowing the retrieval of the structure of an unknown meter. Everything else is left to the choice of the implementer.
